Round weavings can present unique design challenges, which is why I've designed this course to take the guesswork out for both beginning and seasoned weavers.

In this workshop, students will learn to prepare their hoop, warp their hoop, practice plain weave, soumak, and rya knots, and finish off with wrapping their hoop.

You'll explore the major differences between weaving on a hoop versus a rectangular loom such as composition, space adjustments between warp rows, and a few ways to experiment with familiar weaving stitches. Perfect for those wishing to push their weaving skills even further!

This self-led course is for you if:

-You've never woven before.

-You're a weaver but you've never woven on a round frame before.

-You're bored with current round weaving trends and want to push your design options further!

Like all of my e-Courses, Woven: Next Steps is a self-paced course that allows students access to a private website.
There's no expiration date to this information so you can come back to it in between daily responsibilities or you can binge learn over a long weekend.

Rachel Denbow, Fiber Artist

Hello! I believe in making time to make things, being resourceful, and slow clapping when my peers achieve their next great success.

I'm regularly inspired by color pairings from the 70's but textiles from Central and South America have always had my attention. Raised in California, Hispanic markets and Vietnemese neighbors were just as influential to my worldview as Girl Scout meetings in the suburbs. My early interest in other cultures eventually led me to a BA in Teaching English as a Second Language and afforded me the chance to live abroad in both England and China.

Motherhood taught me to slow down and afforded me time to focus on my insane desire to not only be creative, but to be productive in my creativity. Twelve years later I've had the opportunity to write 18 creative skills e-courses, authored a best-selling weaving book, and have taught fiber workshops all over the country. Weaving, specifically, has taught me how connected we are to each others stories. It's offered a sense of belonging to a greater community of women throughout the world that know that same rhythm of the weft passing through the wrap.

I know the ways a hobby can be so much more than a hobby, so it's my great pleasure to introduce you to this very practical and forgiving medium. No promises on how it will change your life but from what I've seen and heard from fellow weavers, it's a very real possibility.

Woven: In the Round Outline

Lesson One: Wrapping Your Frame
This lesson details how to prepare your frame before you warp it. I'll show you how to save time with one little trick.

Lesson Two: Circular Warping and Modified Rya Fringe
I walk you through your first circular warp and show you a few ways to plain weave and rya knots.

Lesson Three: Circular Warping with Spiral Design
This circular warping design covers the basics for a trendy spiral design while also sharing a few new texture tricks.

Lesson Four: Circular Warping with Plain Weave
This piece was inspired by traditional handwoven baskets from Camaroon as well as Chippewa Dream Catchers. It shows you how to maintain consistent stitch length between warp rows as you move towards the widest part of your hoop.

Lesson Five: Vertical Warping & Rya Shag

Learn to warp your hoop using vertical rows. This allows you to tap into your familiar weaving habits while exploring a new shape.

Lesson Six: Vertical Warping with Roving
This might be my new favorite design. Learn to think outside the hoop by using roving and wooden dowels in unconventional ways.

Lesson Seven: Vertical Warping with Soumak
Explore negative space inside your hoop by utilizing more vertical warping.

Lesson Eight: Rya Shag Rings
This dense but highly textured piece is easily customizable and would look lovely in any room.

Lesson Nine: Slices of Color
Explore new ways to use rope and roving in your designs.

Lesson Ten: Wrapped Brass Hoops
Hooked on hoops but need a weaving break? Use your warping skills to create unique wall hangings that can be finished in less than an hour or two.

BONUS LESSON: Concentric Rings
Inspired by a recent trip to Oaxaca, Mexico! This design shows you ways to incorporate negative space into your design as well as two more ways to use rya knots in your work.

Challenge yourself to weaving within a new framework and find yourself expanding into new design possibilities.
